According to Alcohol Concern, around 200,000 people arrive at work with a hangover every day and the over 45’s are three times more likely to drink alcohol every day. Many people have taken on Alcohol Concern’s Dry January campaign – have you?
Ahmed Lulat, Manager of Felixstowe Pharmacy and his team can advise you on how you can help make sure you’re in the know when it comes to your alcohol intake.
“Do you know your recommended units?”, said Ahmed. “If you’re unsure of how many units are in a glass of wine or a pint of beer, ask your pharmacist! We can help you make sense of alcohol units.”
We all know the health risks involved with heavy drinking, but we may not realise that the harmful effects of regular drinking, such as liver damage, high blood pressure and fertility problems often don’t become apparent for a number of years.
“Don’t fall for the alcohol myths. People often suggest whisky can help ease coughs or colds. While alcohol may provide temporary relief, it can prolong the symptoms of a cough or cold by increasing dehydration,” said Ahmed. “If you’re suffering with the symptoms of a cough or cold, ask your pharmacy team for advice on suitable medicines to take.”
Over the counter painkillers can help with the effects of a hangover, together with drinking plenty of water to rehydrate yourself. Paracetamol-based remedies are usually preferable, as aspirin may further irritate the stomach and increase nausea and sickness.
“For more advice on helping yourself to tackle drinking, or for advice and support with living a healthier lifestyle, pop into the pharmacy and have a chat with a member of our team.”
“You can talk in private without the need for an appointment,” said Ahmed. “We welcome everyone and we’re here 7 days a week, early until late.”
